This past weekend I returned to my "hometown" for the annual "Maifest" celebration. For those of you not from Brenham, Texas--this involves kids riding on floats down main street with a king and queen bringing up the rear. In the evening there is an elaborate coronation presenting all the revelers to the crowd. Now this may sound idiotic but when something has been done for 119 years you just kind of go with it. Yes the first official Maifest was held in 1881 with horse and wagon!! It has grown over the years to include a junior maifest for the elementary kids and the senior one for the high school kids--meaning all the great fun times two. As a kid the whole thing was about as good as getting to visit the Willie Wonka chocolate factory. Around February they would announce who the kings and queens would be (usually you had to be kids and grandkids of former royalty or wealthy enough to buy into it--a small town version of debutants!!) Then you would check the mail everyday to see if you were invited to be a part of it. Once you got your invitation, costume assignments would follow--depending on the years theme. For instance this years junior theme was the "Court of Candy Land". Even though I no longer live in Brenham my son was invited to attend since my deceased sisters best friends boys were the kings and I went to high school with the twin queens parents. Whew--that was hard to get out!! Having never been to the maifest my son really could of cared less when he got his invitation but since this would probably be his only chance to be apart of this small town tradition--I put on the hard sell. I knew my ace in the hole was the special maifest edition of the local newspaper which holds pictures of all attendees (at a small fee to the parents of course) since it has long been a goal of his to be in the paper. I also stretched the truth a tad by mentioning I was sure there were star wars characters and football players in "Candy Land". But as you can see (picture on left)--there were not!! Yes--he is the tootsie roll pop owl (minus the hat which he nixed for being too dorky!!) Pretty much every one was some sort of candy. In his group were blowpops, the safety pop cop, a twirl pop and slo-poke. I remember being a nurse, carnation, jester, flapper, german maid and a princess when a friend of mine was the queen. My nephew was once a can of bug spray which was hysterical!! The day begins with the parade.
Everyone waves as the kids pass by and prays no ones falls off when the sixteen year old driver of the tractor/truck lets the clutch out and jerks the float. After all of the floats and a couple of marching bands the parade ends once the "Royal Float" comes by giving everyone a glimpse of the elaborate beading and sequencing on the trains and tiaras and septors.
As the crowd ooohed and awed I over heard some of the town ladies discussing how one of the kings get-ups had $800 worth of Swarkovski crystals attached to it. Doesn't look like the recession is hitting hard in Brenaham these days!! Although you are never quite sure if you can believe the gossip in this small town!!
But the parade is just half of the revelry--that night everyone heads down to Fireman's park to attend the coronation. The high school baseball field is turned into the "Land of Candy" so the parents can hear their child's name over the loud speaker.
A bow is taken as the camera's snap and in a flash it's over--for your child at least. The whole thing clocks in at about 2 1/2 hours!! The good news is that in this German town--the beer stand is right outside and flows plenty!! All is right by the end of the night!!

Started the umptenth re-model project yesterday!!
Sorry I didn't blog yesterday. I was busy with Day 1 of the umptenth re-model project at our house. Let's see--there was the re-flooring and painting when we moved in, the re-model of the master bedroom in 2003, new windows, doors and exterior siding in 2004, changed to stained concrete floors in 2006, complete overhaul to the kitchen, dining room and living room including knocking down 4 wall in 2008, and now--in 2009--a bathroom addition. We have pretty much been in a state of transition for 7 years now. We all swear this will be the last--but we are not putting money on it. I have gained so much experience over all of these projects that I am actually the contractor & the architect & the designer this time. I am praying that I do not screw this up!! I had a meeting yesterday with all parties--carpenter, plumber, electrician, tile setter and we all seem to be on the same page. The framing is now up and so far there are no glitches. By glitches I mean--for example during our 2008 project when we put the refrigerator next to a wall in the kitchen and when we went to open the freezer door---low and behold there was no room for it to open. We ended up having to add another foot and a half to our kitchen from our game-room!! The bright side to this mistake was I got a broom closet after all. (see 1st pic below)

The best part of this project is of course designing the space and picking tile. I was introduced to a wonderful tile company---Walker Zanger (www.walkerzanger.com). They have some of the best understated & sleek modern tiles I have seen--not counting Ann Sacks which is just about the most expensive on the market. I would say WZ comes in the medium to high range. They have a line called Studio Moderno and Vibe that are to die for: (see Below!!)
Pic #1: Studio Moderno Pic #2: Vibe Pic #3: Matouche
I think I will us the Matouche in the dark brown on the floor--except in a smaller pattern called Elph---it has a beautiful rich leather look to it. I have decided to use a tile called Groove in a light color on the entire tub and shower enclosures accented with either the Vibe or Studio Moderno border. I can't wait for it to all come together!! That is the fun part. The not so fun part is feeling gypsum from the torn down sheet rock on your teeth and seeing a thin layer on everything in your house. To those of you who have lived through a re-model------you know exactly what I mean!!
What do you think about my choices?

WHOSE GOT TALENT??
I always thought talent was something one was good at because of hard work and practice. Apparently I was wrong. It is actually defined as a"natural" ability or quality. Meaning you pretty much have to be born with it--not something you can acquire. I am saddened to realize I will never be a talented golfer, talented actor, talented gardner or talented singer--which I have always longed to be. No matter how long I practice singing "Sunday kinda love" by Etta James I will never be able to get on stage, belt it out and have people say--what a talent! I overheard that exact phrase today at Threadgill's for the under eighteen show sponsored by the Austin Chronicle.
The headliner was 17 year old Ariel Abshire, who sang with the ease and melodic grace only a true natural could. Let's see--17, beautiful, talented, wrote all her own songs and lyrics, signed to a record deal, new CD out--Are you green with envy--as am I. But it is nice to know there are still authentic singer-songwriters to discover--not the kind you find on American Idol. Not that she couldn't win American Idol--She just would never want to. It might take her longer to get to the top but make no mistake--she will sing her way there with EXCLAMATION LOVE!!
Head over to her my space page for a listen:

What did I get for my 10 year wedding anniversay you ask? A reason to BLOG!!
Yes, 10 years ago today my partner and I stood in a field of cows in front of all our friends and family and said our I Do's.
This morning I asked him what he had gotten me for our anniversary. His reply--a reason to Blog. What an insensitive jerk you might think--Where are my diamonds!! As well did I as my reply was just that. His reply--I would much rather be an insensitive jerk then a irresponsible romantic. Of course to all that know us you probably realize we were laughing hysterically throughout the conversation (we really crack ourselves up sometimes) because when push comes to shove we both acknowledge we are the happiest we have ever been and I don't need diamonds to know that. The adversities that we have faced have only stengthened our love and commitment to each other and our love and commitment to our family--our "team". After all that life has thrown us--the death of my beloved sister, the birth of our kids, umpteen house remodels, job changes, and the end to Kissinger--we truly still enjoy each others company--and that I believe is the key to a successful partnership. It is not the anniversary gifts, how much money we have, who we are hob-knobbing with or how many hits our son gets at the baseball game--it is how we feel deep inside when it is just me and him sitting in silence together. It's how we can still giggle together in bed each night and talk to each other on the phone 5 times a day. We share a life--all of it--as a team--and when the team is getting beat--we all have to step up as a team. So today--we feel like we just won the World Series!! And tonight--we will celebrate like it!!

Slave to Fashion--My latest adventures at NEIMAN MARCUS LAST CALL
I am a certified
"BARGAIN-AHOLIC"
It is manageable right now but could slip out of hand at any moment. I have been known to buy things in the wrong size because the deal was too good to pass up!!
Take for instance my new acquisition from Neiman Marcus Last Call:
"BARGAIN-AHOLIC"
It is manageable right now but could slip out of hand at any moment. I have been known to buy things in the wrong size because the deal was too good to pass up!!
Take for instance my new acquisition from Neiman Marcus Last Call:
I initially dug the print and the slinky material of this Diane Von Furstenberg dress but once I saw the price the initial "like" turned to "obsession" and I started plotting how I could re-shape my body to fit this off-size deal. The original retail price of this beaut is clearly stated on the tag as $315 but underneath lay the current price--a mere $39.00 ((see below))
But wait--there's more!! What brought me to the store in the first place was their "Blow-Out Anniversary Sale" which meant another 30% off the list price---GASP!! I know, you need to sit down because your jealousy is raging out of control. The final price of $27.30 was mind blowing to say the least. They were almost paying me to take this magnificant dress home. Now I just have to concentrate on loosing the 5 or so pounds that it will take for me to actually wear this dress. I will certainly blog it when it happens!! If it doesn't it will probably end up on ebay with an added profit to pay for the other 2 stunners I bought that day. A very chic Cynthia Steffe cream A-line shift dress (which I have already worn and is at the cleaners) for $40 and a Shoshanna silver lame nighttime cocktail number.
The retail price on this one was listed as $365 but after all of the markdowns were done it went home with me for a mere ---- drumroll please ---- $20.14!!
Even if I never wear this dress I would pay twenty bucks just to look at it in my closet!!
My total for the day $94.65 for 3 exquisite designer dresses.
I have long had a LOVE/HATE relationship with this store
((I will save the hate story for another day))
but on this particular day there was only LOVE in my heart!!
Thanks, Neiman's

IT'S OKAY TO COLOR IN THE LINES!!
Another rainy day in Austin--Another day stuck inside.
Rather than loose myself in the folds of the couch, eyes glued to the tube, I decided to paint. Paint you say--Are you an artist?? I felt like it when I was flinging my wrist creating a menagerie of uninhibited brush strokes--bold yet intrinsically subtle in color. After five hours of delving into the crevices of my creative core/left lobe of my brain I realized what was on my canvas was really just a big yellow blob in a black abyss. The Yellow Blob
My gut was screaming "Stop--this is not good" as I tried to convince myself it was. Of course I ignored that voice and hung it on the wall for all to see and comment. Some liked it--some did not but to me it was shouting "it's a sham--I am just a blob on the wall." How could it be a sham--I can be a painter can't I??? Is painting and being a painter the same thing I questioned. I think not-- I concluded. Just because you can write does not make you a writer. Just because you can cook does not make you a chef. Maybe in a past life I was a carefree creator of whimsical beauty. In this life I am a meticulous and particular creature who has to color in the lines. Not because I aspire to be perfect but because it feels right. So as I listened to the pitter-patter of raindrops outside my window yesterday I carefully traced a meaningless but beautiful pattern over the yellow blob and began the painstaking process of painting precisely in each shape. As I did an overwhelming sense of peace washed over my body and all was right with the world--for a moment. I realized that no matter how bad I wanted to scribble outside the lines I just couldn't-- it was not in my make-up and no matter how bad I want to be the next Monet--I am just not. At the end of the day, I am who I am--somethings you just can't change.
